Portuguese gastronomy has a great variety of delicious dishes, and among them some desserts such as the Belem cakes, called Pastéis de Belem, and originating from a monastery in Lisbon where the original recipe is kept secret.

The Belem cakes are simple and delicious sweets to make, perfect for a dessert or for a children's snack. Also, if you let them participate in the preparation of the recipe, they will learn more about international cuisine.

  • 500 ml. milk
  • 50 gr. Of flour
  • 250 gr. of sugar
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 sheet of puff pastry
  • Butter

Tips: It can be served with a little whipped cream.

1. Cut pieces of puff pastry the size of the molds, which should be low and round. We adjust the dough to make the base and the edge, pricking the puff pastry with a fork.

2. Separate half a glass of milk from the rest and dissolve the flour in it until there are no lumps. Put the rest of the milk with the cinnamon and half a lemon peel in a saucepan, heat over low heat until it boils and add the rest of the milk with the flour. When it boils again, remove the cinnamon and lemon.

3. Add the sugar and keep stirring until it dissolves. Turn off and remove from heat, letting it rest for about 15 minutes.

4. Beat the yolks until well blended, incorporate the rest of the mixture and beat until a homogeneous and thick cream is left.

5. Preheat the oven to 225ºC. Pour pastry cream into the molds until they are 3/4 full. Bake for about 15-20 minutes, until the top is toasted. Remove from the oven and let it warm, serve them with a little sugar sprinkled on top.

The Children's Guide trick: Use the leftover whites from the recipe to make delicious meringues.
