Where does happiness reside? Many say that in the little things; others say that in the things that we do not see. And you, what makes you happy? One Sunday morning, when I was walking through the field, I was struck by some ants that were walking on the ground, one after the other, forming a perfect line. And you will tell me, ‘if there are ants everywhere’, and you are absolutely right. However, at this moment, as I contemplated them, a feeling of joy and tenderness invaded me that after a few moments, I understood that the happiness it was not in the ants but it resided inside me, in my way of perceiving and valuing the beauty of that scene. I think that happiness is that, it does not depend on external things but on how we see, identify and perceive it.

I have always defended the theory that happiness is not a feeling like any other, it is a value that we can learn in our day to day with the practice of some habits. In fact, happiness is already a subject in British schools. At Wellington College, an English boarding school that has become one of the most advanced educational centers in the country, happiness classes are taught for one hour a week, to children from 5 years of age, where feeling good is promoted, debates about emotions, how to cope with difficulties, tensions, etc. After a few years of happiness classes, the teachers noticed that learning to be happy has improved the academic level and performance of the children. A happy child learns more and better.

Considering that, due to the stress and tensions that children experience in their day-to-day lives and that for this reason the cases of anxiety and depression among them have increased considerably, this type of initiative seems very successful. We are so demanding with children, that they learn languages, mathematics and other academic subjects, but we forget to teach them how to cultivate the ability to appreciate such simple things as a flower, an insect, a hug, a talk, a good meal, the silence, gratitude, friendship, etc. Children do not need great things or events to make them feel happy.

It is clear that if we want our children to be happy it is necessary that we help them develop personal capacities and strengths. How? Well, for example, listening to music with them, reading a story, walking and chatting with them, watching a movie together, being with friends, giving thanks, appreciating how good it is to learn, etc. It is very important that for this, we give them examples. Children learn from our attitudes first. If you are an unhappy person, it will be almost impossible for your child to assimilate what you are not. We are your first teachers in everything, let's not forget.
