Getting children to strive, concentrate, learn and achieve their goals in studies is not such an easy task for them or for their parents. For children to be successful in school, it is necessary that they have the intellectual capacity to study, that they are motivated, that they acquire knowledge gradually and that they know how to master work and study habits.

Getting good grades is a matter of effort and discipline. Being lucky in the exams means doing well what you have worked on and, with some basic organizational guidelines and techniques necessary for studying, it will be easier to get good grades.

1. Planning difficulty
It occurs when the child studies, but does not spend the necessary time. In other cases, you try to study at the last moment or it goes over the hours, consequently you are more tired, and you have the impression that you have studied and made an effort when, in fact, it has not been so.
Strategy:Planning is based on determining a daily study schedule. Spending time every day studying and doing homework will help the child to keep up with his studies. For a Primary child, from half an hour to an hour would be a reasonable time, while one of High school should spend about an hour and a half. Children must complete each task in a scheduled time.

2. Difficulty memorizing or fixing content. Understanding the lesson is not the same as just memorizing it. The learning process involves understanding what you want to assimilate and then memorizing it, and it is done through the repetition of the contents. The lack of concentration and of an adequate technique to fix the contents (which is achieved with reading, underlining, outline and summary) also make study difficult.
Strategy: The intervention is done, in these cases, improving attention and concentration, using mnemonic rules, and reviewing the subject. Parents can ask their children the lesson to check the results.

3. Attention and concentration difficulties. It occurs when the child has a hard time concentrating and studying. Any stimulus around him attracts his attention and he wastes his time. Its performance is poor and it takes too long to complete its tasks.
Strategy:To help him, it is necessary to eliminate stimuli that may be capturing his attention while he studies (television, food, siblings around him). It is advisable to do the most difficult tasks when you are most rested, and that you study at the same time every day to achieve good brain performance. It is recommended that you intersperse the study with moments of rest, so that the child regains concentration.

4. Difficulty in reading. The child does not have enough speed in reading or understanding what he reads. He has difficulty knowing the meaning of quite commonly used words, so his vocabulary is rather poor. It also presents difficulties to write texts with correct and clear structures, has a tendency to postpone tasks and feels rejection towards reading. On the other hand, cases of children with dyslexia will have to be treated in an appropriate and special way.
Strategy: To intervene in this case, the best thing is for the child to start reading aloud to acquire a correct intonation, which will help him to understand what is being read. After reading, it is advisable to ask the child about the most important ideas in the text that he has just read. It is also advisable to correct any defect in his reading and encourage him to look up unknown words in the dictionary.

5. Lack of foundation. It is characterized by having difficulties in subjects whose contents have a great connection between some parts and others, as is the case with mathematics. The child cannot assimilate the basic structures of the contents of the various areas.
Strategy:To change this situation, it is necessary to treat this problem with support classes. An older brother, parents or a private teacher can help the child to recover the level that is missing. In this way, we will be enhancing their study techniques in all subjects.

6. Test anxiety. The child may be a good student, but the fear of failing distresses him, overwhelms him and ends up losing his self-confidence. You feel nervous and anxious in the days leading up to tests, and you create negative thoughts about your results. As a consequence, you may have stomach pain, insomnia, sweaty hands, loss of appetite and muscle tension, as well as palpitations. Some develop automatic actions like biting their nails, for example.
Strategy:To alleviate this situation, it is advisable, first, to help the child by explaining what is happening to him so that he knows that everything has a remedy. Then, teach him to develop positive thoughts, focusing his attention on what he has to do here and now, without comparing him to others. It is necessary to teach the child to relax to overcome the situation so that he avoids attending the exam, even if it seems difficult.
